History of The Hope Chest Thrift Store
The Hope Chest opened for business in August 2005 as a means of managing the outpouring of donations that Seeds of Hope was receiving from generous supporters. All profits go directly to Seeds of Hope to help with operating and recovery program costs. Prior to this, the Seeds of Hope staff and residents would hold 2-3 “garage sales” each year to raise money for operating costs.
The Thrift Store helps the residents by providing a springboard back into the work force. When they enter the program, they are set up to work in the thrift store for the first week. This gets the women back in the mind set of waking up and committing to a job, and being back in a structured environment. The women are then encouraged to begin their own job search.
The original location was on W. Washington Street, just west of the downtown area. In August of 2009, the store was relocated to a former hardware store at the corner of Morris and Belmont Streets, where it operates today, thanks to a completely-volunteer staff.
